What is Life Skills GO?

Life Skills GO is an easy-to-use emotion and wellbeing data collection tool that measures readiness to learn through empowered student voice, displays real-time dashboards, reports and insights enabling educators to make informed decisions, and provides quality evidence based and curriculum aligned resources and adaptive lessons to support social and emotional literacy and foster wellbeing.

How does it work?

It collects and analyses student data in real time at an individual, class, stage and school level providing succinct analysis in simple reports and customisable dashboards.

GO supports educators to:

  • Make data-informed decisions about wellbeing programs across the school

  • Assess support in place for individual students

  • Triangulate readiness to learn data with attendance, behaviour and academic outcomes.

Who uses it?

Any K-12 school can use GO to collect student wellbeing data, with a focus on primary education. Hundreds of Public, Catholic, Independent schools and Specialist settings across Australia have been using GO since 2020.

Educators that use GO include:

  • Classroom teachers

  • Wellbeing & support staff

  • Executive leadership teams

What is wellbeing data?

The wellbeing data collected by GO is based on student-led emotional responses and related contexts.

How are you feeling today? “I’m feeling happy.”

Why are you feeling that way? “I’m happy because of something that happened at home”

GO provides up to 48 emotional responses cross-referenced with 5 common school-based contexts.

Why is wellbeing data important and how can I use it?

Any wellbeing data themes or trends identified can be triangulated with more traditional school wellbeing data such as behaviour or attendance to provide a wholistic picture of student wellbeing. This can be used to quantify program impact and prevent disruptions before they happen.

Educators can easily access the right wellbeing information at the right time to take informed actions to support their students based on their real needs.

What are the key GO features that schools use?
  1. Customisable Emotion Check-in

  • Individual student accounts create a safe place for empowering student voice and enable the psychologically safe collection of student wellbeing data and context

  1. Dynamic real-time insights, metrics and dashboards

  • Real time displays of student emotions, context such as online, playground and in the classroom plus monitoring of student readiness to learn. These dashboards are dynamic and customisable so educators can easily access the right information at the right time to take informed actions to support their students

  1. Automated reporting

  • Periodic reports (weekly, fortnightly, 5 weekly, termly, semesterly and annually) are generated for class, stage, school and individual students. These reports analyse the patterns and trends of student emotion check-ins and surface insights for educators. These reports can easily be embedded in strategic planning, evidence against School Excellence and Wellbeing Frameworks and as part of whole school processes such as Learning Support Team and stage meetings

  1. Evidence-based and curriculum-aligned resources

  • Life Skills GO provides a comprehensive library of evidence based & curriculum aligned resources and adaptive lessons, to support social and emotional literacy and foster wellbeing.

What devices can be used?

GO can be used on any device connected to the internet. Most commonly schools check-in with their students using laptops, tablets (iOS or Android) and interactive white boards.

We recommend using Google Chrome as your browser as GO is a web-based application. We don’t have an iOS or Android app.

How do I know it’s right for me?

If you’re a K-12 school we can help.

Most schools take part in a free 14-day trial which we will set up for you. This trial will give you practical and technical insights into how GO works so you can experience it seamlessly slot into your existing processes.

Can I do more than one check-in per day?

Yes. Most schools start with a morning check-in around their roll call time because this slots nicely into existing processes, however you can check-in at any time during the day. This means you can track how students are doing after recess and lunchtimes, for example, or other times in the day that matter to your school. Please note that if you’re using the School Bytes or Sentral integrations you can only mark the roll with Life Skills GO as part of your compliant attendance process.

Can another teacher do my check-ins?

Yes, you can add co-teachers, itinerants, casual and other school colleagues to any class so they can login and carry out a check-in in your absence.

Can students do check-ins individually?

Yes, students are each given their own profile that includes a username and password that can be bookmarked for easy access in a web browser. They also get a unique QR code that can be scanned on a camera app for a quick direct login. If using a shared device students must log out before the next student does a check-in.

I can’t see the context question?

The context question is turned off as a default setting for all users, everyone starts with the Foundation Emotion questions. But it’s really easy to add the context question in the ‘Check-In Settings’ menu. This short video shows you how to do it. Adding the context question helps schools understand the key areas of their school that students are responding to. Meaning they can deliver support in these areas. It also helps students understand some of the motivations behind their emotional status.

Are there more than 6 emotions?

Yes, there are a total of 48 emotions. Which can be offered to your students as part of the ‘Character Illustrations’ mode in the check-in settings. This video will show you how to do it. You can also customise the number of emotions offered to individual students based on emotional literacy and age.

Can I change the context options?

No, the context options are currently fixed at the 5 available; home, the classroom, with my friends, on the playground and online. This ensure data integrity and consistency so you know the key areas of your school to focus on.

Can I change the emotions?

No, you cannot currently change the emotions offered as part of the check-in. However you can choose to offer from between 6-48 emotions in total which covers the full range of emotions a child can experience as part of their emotional literacy journey.

Full customisation is coming and will be launched with some expert guidance in Term 2, 2024.

What is the pinned student feed?

This is an automatically updated group of students who are regularly sharing emotional
responses in their check-ins that may mean they need support from a teacher or other staff member. This stops students from slipping through. You can manage the students you see on this feed, adding or removing as you see fit.

This helps you identify student groups that can potentially become focus points for your internal meetings to ensure they are getting the wellbeing support they need.

What happens if they check in incorrectly?

That’s all part of the process. Don’t worry, sometimes the check-ins may not be completely accurate but it’s still an opportunity to make an acknowledgment and ask the student why they responded that way? It can also be used for explicit instruction as part of your emotional literacy program. Teachers can leave comments to provide objective insights into any check-in made. This develops each students wellbeing profile which is great for communication with the school community. Please note it’s also not possible to delete check-ins.

Can I make comments on the check-ins?

Yes, wherever you see a speech icon or ‘leave comment’ you can type your response and click submit to leave a comment. Students don’t see these comments. This is a great way to build out the profile of your individual students for school meetings and also conversations with parents, carers and the wider school community.

How do I respond to a student if they’re sad or angry?

Life Skills GO is a tool for educators to know which students need wellbeing support and why, in real-time. How you decide to utliise the data provided by the platform should align with your teaching practice and your agreement with your schools' duty of care. We provide curriculum aligned content as part of our subscriptions so you can respond to specific emotional responses with expert videos and resources that compliment your existing processes.

What are the ‘prepare for learning’ exercises?

These are short (2-3 minute) videos that can be used in direct response to a student’s emotional check-in. They are available in a group setting (via an interactive whiteboard) or on individual devices. They offer a great way to realign focus with cognitive behavioural theory, brain breaks or breathing exercises. You don’t have to use them but we’ve had great results because they’re matched the student response.

How can I use the wellbeing data I collect?

For teachers, your classroom dashboard will give you real-time data on who has checked in, which students may need additional support and how ready-to-learn your class is (as a %). You will also be able to see your daily ready to learn % compared to your year-to-date average. This is so you know if the current day is up or down from a student wellbeing perspective.

The student insights will tell you any important changes to individual student wellbeing based on their current check-in. If a student normally checks in happy but they check in sad or tired, Life Skills GO will tell you.

Leadership teams are sent weekly reports via email with a summary of their wellbeing data. These are also available for each student. The executive dashboard will give a whole-school insight with a class overview so you can see which classes

Do you offer online training sessions for trial users?
